If your garden is south-facing or gets a lot of sunlight, the Meglio Premium Seeded Turf is a fantastic choice. Delivering a uniform finish, short blades and a verdant green look, this highly durable turf is weed-free and comprises a variety of grass cultivars imported from the Netherlands, including bent grass, dwarf rye and fescues.
On the other hand, if your lawn is shady or in a high-traffic area, the Supina Shade and Wear Turf is your perfect option. Grown using the highly shade-tolerant Supina species, this grass has a long active season, so it becomes green in early Spring and stays green well into Autumn. Dense and hardwearing, it is really easy to maintain.
Lawn Survey & Planning
At Jackson Landscaping Ltd, we know a thing or two about Turf Laying and understand that every Plymouth garden is unique. When visiting your home to look at your lawn, we consider aspects such as:
- Drainage (dry or boggy)
- Direction of your garden (North, South, West or East facing)
- Amount of sunlight (shaded or full sunlight)
- Types of weeds present (shallow or deep-rooted)
- Top soil (making sure it’s not high clay content or too much compost)
- Your overall goals (size and shape)
Following our survey and measurements, we will provide you with a free, no-obligation quote and recommend one of our two different types of grass, which are suitable for the majority of gardens, ensuring we choose the right turf for your space. Alternatively, you can opt for Artificial Grass for a low-maintenance solution.
Turf Installation
Once you’ve decided on your lawn, we can get to work clearing the area and removing your old grass, ready for a new turf to be laid. Depending on the condition of your lawn, we will have a different approach:
Boggy & Retaining Water
(Due to the use of subsoil with a heavy clay content instead of topsoil, especially in new build houses)
We will remove all your subsoil and install loam-blended topsoil comprising sand, fertiliser, compost, and loam. This will allow water to drain through rather than be retained, which is a common problem in the local Plymouth area.
Not Enough Topsoil
(Which results in burning from the sun, drying out and killing your grass)
We will start by stripping your turf and adding a layer of topsoil before Turf Laying.
Leatherjackets & Chafer Grubs
(A type of grub that eats the roots and kills your grass)
We will strip your turf, manually remove the leatherjackets/chafer grubs, then install fresh loam topsoil and lay fresh turf. We then recommend that we revisit in July/August to spray a commercial insecticide.
Moss & Weeds
(Especially if weeds and/or moss have taken over your grass)
We will strip your weeds and existing turf, using a turf cutter and manual digging out of deeply rooted weeds. Then, we will returf with a layer of high-quality loam blended topsoil (in some rare cases, we would need to spray off your grass with weed killer).
Aftercare & Garden Maintenance
After we have finished Turf Laying, our support for your lawn doesn’t stop there. We will:
- Clear the area so that your garden looks neat & tidy
- Walk you around your garden, making sure you’re happy with everything
- Explain how you can look after your lawn & provide you with a Turf Care sheet
- Provide ongoing Lawn Care if required, with monthly, quarterly or annual visits, depending on your needs
- Spray your lawn for leatherjackets/chafer grubs with a commercial insecticide in July/August time

Can You Lay Turf All Year Round?
Yes, providing the weather conditions are not extreme at the point of turf installation.
How Much Will It Cost to Returf My Garden?
The costs of our turf services depend entirely on the size of your garden and the amount of preparation work (such as clearing and levelling) that’s needed beforehand.
What Kind of Turf Do You Use?
We have two different turf options: ‘Meglio Premium Seeded’ and ‘Supina Shade and Wear’. Our high-quality turf is sourced from local suppliers and is suitable for virtually all gardens.
If your garden is sunny or south-facing, then the Meglio turf would be your best option. If your garden is shady or is a high-traffic/thoroughfare area, we recommend the Supina turf.
Do You Offer Free Site Surveys & Quotes?
Yes, we do! We’ll visit your home to find out more about your garden, your requirements, and how you plan to use your garden. This will allow us to recommend the best kind of turf for your outdoor space. Then, we’ll survey the site together, take some measurements, and discuss your different options and prices.
Once we’ve done this, we’ll head back to our office to prepare your quote and talk to our suppliers, and then provide you with a no-obligation quote for our Turf Laying Services in Plymouth, Devon, or Cornwall.
