This exhaustive guide aims to give you the lowdown on over-seeding, from demystifying common myths to providing Plymouth-specific advice. I’ve got it all covered!

The Basics of Lawn Over-Seeding

What is Over-Seeding Exactly?

Over-seeding is the process of adding grass seed over an existing lawn. This straightforward action supercharges your lawn, making it more resilient and lush.

When is Over-Seeding Necessary?

Your lawn sends signals—bald patches, uneven colour, increased vulnerability to diseases. You Must listen to these cues; they indicate it’s time for a lawn revamp through over-seeding or it if you don’t its going to be a new lawn.

The Benefits: Beyond Aesthetics

It’s not just eye-candy! A well-over-seeded lawn can suppress weeds and improve soil quality!

Common Myths About Over-Seeding

Busting Plymouth Lawn Care Misconceptions

No, over-seeding won’t suffocate your existing lawn, nor is it an alternative to good basic lawn care. Consider it as a supplement, not a substitute to looking after your lawn.

Over Seeding is Not Just for Golf Courses!

Sure, golf courses use this technique to keep their lawns immaculate, but that doesn’t mean it’s off-limits for your residential lawn. Spoiler: Your Plymouth garden deserves the same A-list treatment.

Preparing for the Over Seeding Journey

Choosing the Right Time

Timing is quintessential. For Plymouth residents, late summer to early fall is usually the golden period for over-seeding. It’s neither too hot nor too cold, providing an optimal environment for seed germination.

Knowing Your Grass Type

Understanding your lawn’s existing grass type is paramount to ensure compatibility with the new seeds you lay. In Plymouth the vast majority are a blend of fescues, dwarf rye & bent grass cultivars so all round mixed blend is normally best to get the best results.

Tools You’ll Need: The Over-Seeding Arsenal

I recommend hiring a lawn aerator and a scarifier from Beaver Teeth Services in Plymouth. The reason for this is so the job is easier and the cost is minimal.

The tools I recommend purchasing are a garden roller spreader and a seed spreader.

The Anatomy of Quality Seeds

Selecting the Right Seeds: The Criteria

When selecting seeds, look for disease resistance, growth rate, and suitability to Plymouth’s climate. Quality is non-negotiable! I recommend going to South Devon turf and buying directly from them because the vast majority of Plymouth Turf originated from there.

Steps Before Over-Seeding

Lawn Mowing: The Art of the Trim

A nice tight, even mow exposes the soil better, ensuring superior seed-to-soil contact.

Aerating the Soil for Success

Compacted soil is a seed’s nemesis. Aeration alleviates this, making it easier for the roots to penetrate the soil so hire that aerator. These aerators will remove little plugs of soil allowing your soil to breath and roots to grow.

Scarify that lawn!

If your lawn has a thick thatch or has a lot of moss then this process can’t be missed. Its extremely easy to do just start the machine up and use it like a lawn mower but with this machine you will need to use it up and down side to side and then diagonal to ensure you get every spot (please note you lawn will look worse before we can make it look better!)

The Over-Seeding Process

The Right Technique for Even Coverage

I recommend a crisscross pattern for even seed distribution just a nice even spread and remember don’t over seed as you will stop the seeds from taking.

Hand vs Machine: Which is Better?

While hand-seeding gives you more control, machine-seeding ensures faster and more uniform coverage. It’s all about your personal preference and lawn size so just use common sense but I always use a machine and obviously larger machines for bigger lawns.

After applying the seed

Take your garden roller spreader and fill it with a nice topsoil/compost blend you can get this type of soil from your local Plymouth Garden centre.

Then simply go over the lawn with your roller and cover the seed with the topsoil using the spreader will ensure a nice even application.

Please ensure you apply enough to cover the seeds but not to much that you can’t see the existing grass leafs of your existing lawn sticking out.

Timing the Fertilization Right

NO! Do not fertilize immediately after over-seeding wait for minus of 6 weeks and often if you apply in autumn you do not need to fertilise until next spring.

Remember the soil you have applied will also have nutrients to help seed growth.

Post Over-Seeding Care

Watering Schedules: The Dos and Don’ts

A consistent, light watering schedule initially helps in better seed germination so just make the soil damp.

First Mow: Patience is Key

Hold off on mowing until the new grass reaches at least 3 inches in height. Premature mowing can stunt growth.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Overcrowding: The Seed Spacing Fiasco

Less is often more. Overcrowding can lead to inadequate nutrients for each seed, affecting growth.

Neglecting Post-Care Routine

Post-care is not an option; it’s a necessity. It involves periodic watering, mowing, and fertilization.

Plymouth-Specific Tips for Over-Seeding

Local Climate Considerations

Plymouth has its quirks when it comes to climate. Adapting your over-seeding strategy to local conditions can make a world of difference so for example don’t over seed in extreme conditions.
