Not all fencing is installed to our high standards, which means it will be more susceptible to damage from the rain and wind.
Lack of Protection at the Base
This may be because the fence posts are installed with nothing to protect the base – they’re just surrounded by soil, so the grain in the timbers absorbs water, causing them to rot. At the top soil point, soil contact touches the post, which then rots with fungus, and then it snaps off and falls over.
Low-Quality & Untreated Timber
Additionally, the timber may be low quality and untreated. If you requested a quote and get a cheap option, you’ll likely receive cheap timber that isn’t incised with tanalising treatment and only has a very thin surface layer of protection, which will weather away. Once the water penetrates through the top surface layer, the fence posts rot from the inside out.
Fence Posts Too Far Apart
Sometimes fence posts are installed too far apart, making the fencing weak. New build sites, especially, like to cut corners by placing the posts 3 metres apart, which puts too much strain on the posts in high winds, causing them to snap.

When we fix or install replacement fencing posts in your garden, we maintain our high standards to ensure the repairs we carry out will withstand the elements. As a Postsaver Approved Installer, we ensure that our fence posts are at least 2 feet deep, incised & tanalised and surrounded by concrete to deliver enhanced strength and durability. As standard, we install our fence posts at a maximum spacing of 1.8 metres between each post.
Drainage & Protection
Water can enter from above during rain and sit on the post. When the post gets wet, water will travel down the timber. As the water moves down, it needs a drainage layer. To prevent the posts from rotting, we lay clean stone at the bottom for drainage. Then, we pour in concrete or Postcrete to stabilise the post against movement. Since the Postcrete is at soil level, there will never be any soil in contact with the post. We also use a Postsaver Dual-Layer Barrier Sleeve to protect against rot at that bottom point for extra defence.
